QuickBooks Online, also know as QBO, is the most popular accounting software on the market today. It is user friendly and effectively satisfies the bookkeeping needs for the vast majority of small and medium sized businesses. One of its strongest aspects is its convenience – it can be accessed online by multiple users, and there is a long list of third party apps that integrate with it. In addition, it offers various service level tiers which you can match to your bookkeeping needs, and provides payroll and HR services as well. This is the most common software used by our clients. QuickBooks Desktop, or QBD, is not quite as popular as its online cousin but is still quite common, in particular with larger businesses or those with more complex bookkeeping needs. Unlike QBO, QBD doesn’t come with online access so businesses share their files or often times a bookkeeper may remote into a server that holds the QBD file. Like QBO, it has several tiers depending on the specific features which your business requires and also offers payroll and HR services. QBD predated QBO, but over time has become less popular with smaller businesses due to the convenience of QBO.

Sage is the modern equivalent of what used to be Peachtree – once a legend in the world of bookkeeping. Like QBO, the most recent versions of Sage offer an online portal, which definitely ups the convenience. (Although some older versions of the software still run on the desktop, like QBD.) Their are two service tiers, and Sage doesn’t currently offer payroll services. Sage is particularly popular in the UK and Canada, but you can find it in use in the U.S.A. as well.

Xero is the new kid on the block in the world of bookkeeping software. (Relatively speaking at least, the company was founded in 2006.) The software operates through an online portal, like QBO and Sage, so it has a strong convenience factor. Xero has three pricing packages and while it doesn’t offer payroll services (or HR), it does integrate with Gusto, which is an extremely common payroll service provider. While Xero was founded in New Zealand, it is quite commonly used in the USA and probably second to QuickBooks in popularity, particularly with businesses with the least complex accounting needs.
